No you can’t . . . Yes you can . . .
There is a lie we have believed here in America and maybe the whole world . . . “You can be anything you want to be if you work hard enough.” This lie causes us to spend a great deal of our time working on our weaknesses and outside of the zone where we can be all we are created to be. Tom Rath says in StrengthFinder 2.0 we should get to know our strengths and develop them. On page 9 he states, “You CANNOT be anything you want to be - but you CAN be a lot more of who you already are.” (used caps. instead of bold) The thought is don’t try to be what you are not but work on your strengths and become more of who you already are.
Here is a description for this book from Barns and Noble [dot] com.
To help people uncover their talents, Gallup introduced StrengthsFinder in the 2001 management book Now, Discover Your Strengths. The book ignited a global conversation, while StrengthsFinder helped millions discover their top five talents.
In StrengthsFinder 2.0, Gallup unveils the new and improved version of its popular online assessment. With hundreds of strategies for applying your strengths, StrengthsFinder 2.0 will change the way you look at yourself—and the world—forever.
One of the things I read in StrengthsFinder 2.0 which makes it an upgrade from the original is the fact that when you take the assessment, it give you a specific description to your personality verses the previous version which gave everyone in the same theme the same description.
Here are my top 5 and the shared description for each theme (the personalized description is much longer & detailed):
Jason Sebren - top 5 themes
Activator
Belief
Individualization
Connectedness
Command
ACTIVATOR:
People who are especially talented in the Activator theme can make things happen by turning
thoughts into action. They are often impatient.
BELIEF:
People who are especially talented in the Belief theme have certain core values that are unchanging.
Out of these values emerges a defined purpose for their life.
INDIVIDUALIZATION:
People who are especially talented in the Individualization theme are intrigued with the unique
qualities of each person. They have a gift for figuring out how people who are different can work
together productively.
CONNECTEDNESS:
People who are especially talented in the Connectedness theme have faith in the links between all
things. They believe there are few coincidences and that almost every event has a reason.
COMMAND:
People who are especially talented in the Command theme have presence. They can take control of
a situation and make decisions.
Thanks to David Walters for the book . . .
